Looking to Enter in the Beauty Industry: Tips for Interns
April 3, 2017
The beauty industry has many facets to it. If you correlate it with the fashion industry, the beauty side is makeup and other similar activity. Or it can be seen through the lens of beauty salons and spas which is a completely different picture. It can also be the print media that specialises ion beauty and related news and features. Whatever industry you might choose to intern in, there are some basic guidelines that you would need to follow. Most importantly, when you go through the tips, you’ll find that there are many things common to the different slots in the beauty industry as a whole.
Personal grooming – When you advise others on beauty or ensure that they look beautiful, isn’t it but natural that you should lead by example? Keep yourself in optimal clean conditions. Start with your nails. Minor as it may seem, nails create a big visual impact on another person. Keep your nails from medium to short in length, filed and cleaned. Long nails can also cause problems when you are typing, texting or carrying out beauty treatments.
Keep a low business like profile, either at office, beauty clinic, or at fashion shows applying make-up. Don’t douse yourself in perfume. Not only will it put your clients off, it will mask the perfume that your clients might want for themselves. Similarly, heavy makeup is a strict no-no. During your internship, keep your looks as natural and light as possible. It highlights your beauty as well as saves you hours every day getting ready for the workday.
Be organised – Be organised right down to the last detail. As an intern, your supervisor should be able to bank on you for even the smallest matters. It is not merely about organising lotions on a shelf or keeping things handy for say, a photo shoot. For example, if a particular edition of a beauty magazine is on IPL machine for sale, you should be able to give inputs to the editorial team after in-depth online research on the subject. Once your supervisors know that as an intern you are valuable to the organisation, your rise will be faster through the ranks later.
Be professional – Be a thorough professional and do not take to twitter or Facebook to reveal details of your job. A magazine often has insider information and sneak previews about a soon to be launched beauty product. Along with a few select editorial staff, you as an intern might be privy to classified information too. Most companies will have a non-disclosure agreement with the organisation. Revealing a part or full details will have your internship terminated or it might even lead to a career decline.
Update your knowledge routinely- Keep abreast of what is happening in the beauty industry. As an intern do not merely focus on the goals of your organisation. If you are in the print media, know what is happening in terms of latest products. If you are in the beauty treatment and procedure sector, know about the latest technical innovations. You are not going to stay an intern forever. When you do have career in the beauty business, this curiosity during internship will stand you in good stead.
These are some of the tips that you can use as an intern in the beauty industry.
